Aging of the upper and lower eyelids creates sagging of skin and herniation of fat (i.e., bags). The upper eyelid develops extra skin that folds over, creating a tired look and making it very difficult to apply eye makeup. The lower eyelid aging is far more complex and relates to the aging of the upper cheek and midface. In essence, the fat falls to the lower face and creates a hollow lower eyelid.

These changes can be corrected surgically. The upper eyelid blepharoplasty (eyelid lift) is performed via an incision in the crease of the upper eyelid above the lashline to make the scars as invisible as possible. The extra skin is removed, and we often address the herniated fat. The eyes appear more youthful and refreshed, creating a fresh look. If you have severe drooping of the upper lids, a blepharoplasty can improve vision by opening the eye. The eyes are commonly the first place to show aging, and the results from this minor procedure can be quite dramatic.

The lower eyelid is often addressed by the removal of the herniated fat (bags) and tightening of the skin with lasers or skin removal. These techniques can often create a hollow appearance. There is another way to address the lower eyelids; this is done by conserving the fat that is present and elevating the volume of the midface with a facelift, with the added removal of the extra skin from the eyelid. This creates a more youthful appearance to the eyelid and cheek. The results are more natural and create an unoperated appearance.
